The best way to get the bus tickets that will take you from the town of Aguas Calientes to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu. The trip takes no more than 30 minutes. The outbound trip goes uphill and the return trip downhill. Although you can also walk up, the fastest, most comfortable and safest way is to do it by bus.
The tickets are round trip (from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu and vice versa). However, visitors can also choose the option of traveling only one way or only return. Remember that children (between 5 and 11 years old) and Peruvian tourists have a special discount. Children under 5 years old do not pay.

The distance between Aguas Calientes and the entrance to Machu Picchu is 9 km. Buses travel along the Hiram Bingham Highway across the Vilcanota River, a journey of approximately 30 minutes. Walking up a more direct route, via stairs, can take more than 2 hours, so it is not recommended for those who then plan to hike in the mountains of Machu Picchu.
The bus ride ascends the steep slopes of the mountain that houses the Inca Citadel. The descent, which takes about 25 minutes, follows the same path. Some visitors prefer to go up by bus and walk down.
The ascent from Aguas Calientes to the entrance gate to Machu Picchu is 05:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Important:
The descent from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes is from 6:00 am. - 5:30 p.m.

Tickets do not need to be reserved in advance. The ticket office is open during the following hours:
Monday to Sunday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
At the entrance to the Inca City you will find another ticket office in case you want to walk up and go down by bus.
During the high tourist season (June, July and August) people usually wait in long lines in Aguas Calientes to buy bus tickets. You can make your purchase at our offices.
