Spring in Peru: what to expect if you travel between September and December?
Published in September 24, 2025

Fellow traveler, if you are planning to visit Peru soon, I have some great news for you: spring begins at the end of September, a special season when the weather starts to change, the landscapes are renewed, and the travel experience becomes different. Here we explain how spring is experienced in the different regions of the country, so you can better plan your adventure.

What does spring mean in Peru?

Spring arrives with the equinox, that moment when day and night are almost equal in length. From then on, the days become longer and brighter. However, Peru is a diverse country: the coast, the mountains, and the jungle do not experience the change in the same way.

Spring on the coast of Peru

  • Lima: The capital transitions from gray winter days to sunnier mornings and afternoons. The weather becomes warmer and more pleasant for strolling through the historic center, Miraflores, or Barranco.
  • La Libertad (Trujillo) and Lambayeque (Chiclayo): In the north, the beaches become more attractive, with a more stable climate that is perfect for enjoying the sea.
  • Ica: The sun is more constant, ideal for visiting the dunes of Huacachina, the desert, or the Ballestas Islands in Paracas.

Spring in the mountains

  • Cusco: Here, spring coincides with the start of the rainy season. That doesn't mean it will rain every day, but you will see cloudy skies in the afternoon and intermittent drizzle. In return, the valleys begin to turn green and the landscapes come alive.
  • Puno: As in Cusco, Lake Titicaca is surrounded by more vegetation, and although there is rain, the floating islands look more vibrant.
  • Arequipa: The climate is mild, with sunny days and blue skies framing the Misti volcano. Perfect for visiting the Colca Canyon.
  • Ayacucho and Apurímac: Moderate rainfall is expected, but you will also see mountains covered in green and fields in bloom.

Spring in the jungle

  • Madre de Dios (Puerto Maldonado) and Loreto (Iquitos): The jungle becomes more humid, with heavy rains on some days, but this only enhances biodiversity. It is a time when the forests are at their most lush and the wildlife is most active.
  • San Martín and Ucayali: These regions also boast lush landscapes, ideal for those seeking Amazonian experiences such as hiking, bird watching, and boat trips.
