Avoid lines and crowds at Machu Picchu

Visiting Machu Picchu is a dream for millions of people around the world. Standing in front of the imposing Inca citadel, feeling the energy of the mountain, and enjoying the scenery is a unique experience. However, what many people don't know until it's too late is that this trip can become frustrating if not planned in advance.

Getting tickets, avoiding lines, and securing a good time to visit Machu Picchu is not just a matter of luck: it's a matter of organization.  Here's how to prevent those headaches and enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

Low season and high season: why does it matter so much?

One of the keys to avoiding crowds at Machu Picchu is knowing the difference between low season and high season:

  • Low season or rainy season: November to April.
  • High season or dry season: May to October.

During the low season, there are fewer tourists, so it is easier to get tickets even at shorter notice. However, in the high season, which also coincides with the dry season in Cusco, demand skyrockets and tickets sell out quickly.

During the low season, there are fewer tourists, so it is easier to get tickets even if you book a little less in advance.  However, during the high season, which also coincides with the dry season in Cusco, demand skyrockets and tickets sell out quickly.

Recommendations according to season:

  • Low season: buy your ticket at least 1 month in advance.
  • High season: buy your ticket 2 to 3 months in advance, especially if you have fixed dates.

You can purchase your tickets on the official website: https://tuboleto.cultura.pe/llaqta_machupicchu , where you can check availability in real time, choose your circuit, and select your entry time.

What if you are already in Cusco and don't have a ticket?

If for some reason you didn't buy your ticket in advance, you still have an alternative: buy it in person in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes).

Every day, the Ministry of Culture releases 1,000 tickets for direct sale, available in both low and high season. But there is something important you should know: you cannot buy them on the same day you plan to visit.

You must arrive at least one day before in Aguas Calientes to queue up early and get a ticket for the next day.

High demand dates: be very careful!

There are specific dates when the number of visitors doubles or even triples.   In these cases, if you don't have a ticket, you will need to be in Aguas Calientes 2 or even 3 days in advance to have any chance of getting in.

These dates are:

  • Holy Week (March or April)
  • Cusco Festivities (June)
  • National Holidays (last 2 weeks of July)
  • School holidays in Peru (last week of July and first 2 weeks of August)
  • Christmas and New Year (last two weeks of December)

Key tip: if you are traveling on these dates and do not have a ticket, arrive in Machu Picchu Pueblo a few days early. Otherwise, you may be left out.

What else do you need to avoid stress?

In addition to your ticket, make sure you have all of the following ready before your visit:

  • Train and bus tickets (round trip)
  • Valid ID or passport
  • Accommodation reservation if you are staying in Aguas Calientes.
  • Internet connection (if you plan to make last-minute reservations)
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

Make your visit to Machu Picchu a magical experience, not a chaotic one.

Machu Picchu is a destination that requires planning.  It's not just about getting there, but about doing so at the right time, with the right documents, and without unnecessary rush.
