After a month of uncertainty, encouraging news has arrived from Cusco for thousands of travelers: the tourist route to Humantay Lake and the snow-capped Salkantay mountain has been reopened. The District Municipality of Mollepata confirmed that access for domestic and foreign tourists was restored on the morning of Friday, March 6, using an alternate route that was made available. This reopening ends the closure that was imposed on February 6 due to hazardous geological conditions, which is a significant relief for the region's tourism sector. However, visitors should be aware of the new safety measures and alternative routes that have been implemented.
Access to Laguna de Humantay was closed on February 6 due to heavy rains and a geological fault in the “Balconpata” sector, an area that is vulnerable during this time of year. Multisectoral authorities implemented the measure as a safeguard for the integrity of users, given the imminent risk. During the weeks of restriction, authorities carried out thorough inspections and essential rehabilitation work to ensure a safe environment for future visitors.
The Municipality of Mollepata, following the recommendations of the Executive Committee for the Management of the Laguna de Humantay – Salkantay – Machu Picchu tourist route, has completed the rehabilitation and improvement works on the alternate route known as “Llaqtallaqtalloq”.
The primary objective of these actions is to guarantee the safety and integrity of tourists, tour operators, and the local population. For this reason, as of Friday, March 6, access to the Humantay Lake and Salkantay snow-capped mountain route will be reopened.
The dry season, from May to November, is the ideal time to visit Lake Humantay. During these months, clear skies, pleasant weather, and the splendor of the landscape guarantee an optimal experience.
However, with the reopening of the alternate route in March, travelers who planned their visits for this month will finally be able to fulfill their dream of seeing this natural wonder, as long as weather conditions permit and they strictly follow the authorized routes.
Remember that traveling informed makes your experience much easier and safer. Laguna Humantay awaits you with its turquoise waters and dreamlike landscapes. Access has been improved, ensuring your safety without detracting from the magic of this natural wonder in Cusco.
