DAY 1
Welcome and Night Walk in the Jungle
On this day, we will meet you at the Puerto Maldonado airport and then head to the Wasaí Maldonado Hotel, where we will enjoy a refreshing tropical juice and a brief orientation about what will be done in the coming days.
After the welcome, we will embark on our journey to the Wasaí Tambopata Lodge, located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. The journey combines a road trip to the Tambopata River, where we will board a motorized boat to navigate downstream for approximately 20 minutes. During the trip, we will be able to observe exotic birds, capybaras, caimans, and, with a little luck, other wild animals.
Once settled in at the lodge, we will have time to rest and acclimatize. At dusk, we will take an introductory night walk, where we will venture into the forest to observe insects, amphibians, and perhaps some nocturnal mammals. Finally, we will return to the lodge to enjoy our first dinner.
Night at Wasai Tambopata Lodge
DAY 2
Adventure at the Macaw Clay Lick and Ethnobotanical Hike
Today we will start very early, around 4:30 a.m., to embark on our journey to the “El Chuncho” Macaw Clay Lick, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. During the boat trip, we will have the opportunity to watch the sunrise over the river and observe the riverside wildlife.
Upon arriving at the clay lick, we will witness one of the most impressive natural spectacles of the jungle: hundreds of macaws, parrots, and other birds gather to feed on the clay walls. While enjoying breakfast outdoors, we will marvel at this colorful natural show.
Then, we will return to the lodge by boat along the Tambopata River. On the way, we may see capybaras, monkeys, tapirs, and, if we are lucky, a jaguar. We will have free time to relax in hammocks, swim in the river, or participate in a fun artisanal fishing session.
We will have lunch at approximately 1:00 p.m. After lunch, we will take an ethnobotanical walk along a 1 km trail. On this tour, we will learn more about the medicinal plants and emblematic trees of the forest, such as the lupuna, the walking palm, and other trees used ancestrally by Amazonian communities.
We will end the day with a nighttime boat trip to look for caimans and other animals that emerge at nightfall. At the end of our hike, we will head to the lodge to enjoy our dinner.
Night at Wasaí Tambopata Lodge
DAY 3
Sandoval Lake and lodging at Hotel Wasaí Maldonado
After breakfast, we will say goodbye to the lodge and head back to the city of Puerto Maldonado, where we will stay at the Wasaí Maldonado Hotel. There we can rest in our comfortable rooms and enjoy a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, we will sail along the Madre de Dios River for about 30 minutes to the start of the trail to Lake Sandoval, one of the most iconic places in the region. We will hike approximately 3 km (one way) through the lush jungle until we reach this beautiful lake.
Once there, we will board a traditional canoe and glide gently through its calm waters, exploring the local wildlife: birds such as herons, hoatzins, and kingfishers; playful monkeys; and, with a little luck, the family of giant otters that inhabits the lake.
At sunset, we will return to the hotel for dinner. Those who wish can enjoy the pool with a waterfall or take a stroll through the city and enjoy the nightlife of Puerto Maldonado.
Overnight at Hotel Wasaí Maldonado
