Frequently Asked Questions About Machu Picchu Tours

The 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour is highly recommended because it allows you to acclimatize properly and visit the citadel early without feeling rushed.

Most of our tours depart directly from Cusco and include a transfer to board the train in Ollantaytambo.

The price of a Machu Picchu tour depends on the type of train service, the duration of the trip, the hotel category, and your chosen route. There are also alternative routes to Machu Picchu such as programs that include the Sacred Valley or scenic treks which can influence the final cost of your vacation package.

Yes, absolutely. We strongly recommend booking well in advance, especially during the high season, because daily entrance tickets are strictly limited and sell out fast.

Machu Picchu is located at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level, which is actually significantly lower than Cusco at 3,400 meters (11,154 feet). However, some travelers may still experience mild altitude sickness. It is highly recommended to acclimatize in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before your visit.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu and fully enjoy your vacation is during the dry season between April and October. These months correspond to the high season when there is a larger influx of tourists due to the highly favorable weather conditions. While occasional isolated showers can happen, this period generally features clear skies allowing you to maximize your experience and capture the best photos of the area.

To enter Machu Picchu, there is a strict set of rules that must be followed during your visit to the citadel. Non-compliance can result in immediate expulsion from the archaeological site without the right to a refund and may initiate legal action.

You cannot bring large backpacks or large amounts of food. Small snacks are permitted as long as you do not leave any wrappers or trash inside the archaeological site. Illegal substances, alcohol, or entering while intoxicated are strictly prohibited. Walking sticks, umbrellas, tripods, and camera or phone stands are not allowed. Animals are forbidden, with the sole exception of certified guide dogs.

Loud or disruptive noises such as clapping, shouting, whistling, or singing are prohibited, as well as jumping. You are also not allowed to bring banners, poles, signs, or any items for advertising purposes.

If you are planning to travel during the high season, we highly recommend booking your tickets 2 to 3 months in advance. Tickets sell out very quickly during this time because there is no rain and most international travelers choose this season for their visit.

If you plan to visit during the low season, booking 3 to 4 weeks in advance is usually sufficient to secure a relaxed visit. However, if you want to hike Huayna Picchu mountain, you must book 3 to 4 months in advance regardless of the season. Access to this specific mountain is strictly limited to only 200 tickets per day, making it the highest-demand ticket in the sanctuary.

Yes, you can absolutely visit during the rainy season (November to March), but you must be prepared for potential showers. The great advantage is that the vegetation is lush and intensely green, and there are far fewer tourists, even though the weather can be a bit unpredictable.

On the trains to Machu Picchu, you are only allowed to bring a small carry-on bag or backpack with a maximum weight limit of 5 kilos (11 pounds). For this reason, we strongly advise bringing only your essential items for your visit to Machu Picchu and leaving the rest of your luggage safely at your hotel in Cusco.
