Inti Raymi, also known as the Festival of the Sun, has its roots in the year 1430, during the height of the Inca empire, when it was established by the Inca Pachacutec. This festivity, which took place in Cusco during the winter solstice on June 24, extended over 15 days. After the arrival of the Spaniards, the Inti Raymi was banned, but persisted in a clandestine manner. In 2001, it was officially declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in Peru.

Although the festivity itself takes place on a single day, the preparations and related activities can extend over several days in the Cusco region of Peru.
