Discover the wonder of the most beautiful sunrise in the world at the Tres Cruces viewpoint, Paucartambo, Cusco. Also known as the "Balcony of the Orient", this enclave is one of the three places in the world where you can witness the winter solstice.
The Tres Cruces viewpoint, a natural observatory, offers a unique visual spectacle during sunrise, full of colors, shades and a captivating light, justly earning the title of the 'most beautiful sunrise in the world'. From the point called 'Akhanacu', one can contemplate the vast expanse of the green jungle of Manu National Park.
Throughout the year, especially in May, June and July, the Tres Cruces viewpoint offers the opportunity to witness the sunrise from 5:00 a.m., giving a natural spectacle of great beauty. This viewpoint is located near the town of Paucartambo, known for its deep-rooted customs and typical dances.
The Tres Cruces viewpoint is located 40 kilometers from the city of Paucartambo, in the department of Cusco, on the border between the majestic Andean mountains and the immense Peruvian jungle. At an altitude of 3,850 meters above sea level, it provides an unparalleled view.
To get there, after arriving in Peru, the first destination is the city of Cusco. From there, take the paved road to the south, with a trip that takes approximately 3 hours. Public transportation services, which depart from the bus stop on Diagonal Angamos Avenue in Cusco, cost approximately 20 soles (6 USD) per person. Once in Paucartambo, it is necessary to hire a private service to travel the 45 kilometers to the viewpoint. It is crucial to arrive early to appreciate the sunrise at 5 am.
This phenomenon attracts thousands of visitors who come to the Mirador to witness the spectacular sunrise from the famous 'Mirador de Akhanacu', also known as the balcony of the east.
The sunrise at the Tres Cruces viewpoint is considered one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world. The light mixes with yellow and orange hues, creating a visual delight for the spectators. During the winter solstice, at the end of June, a unique phenomenon known as 'the white ray' occurs only in Japan and Cusco. During this event, an optical illusion can be seen with three suns on the horizon, the result of the effervescent light and the sun's proximity to the planet.
Paucartambo, a province of Cusco, stands out for its Andean geography bordering the jungle, as well as for its deep-rooted customs and festivities. In addition to the Tres Cruces viewpoint, the region has Inca and pre-Inca archeological sites, such as Watoqto, the Ninamarca chullpas and the Mauk Allaqta archeological complex, as well as the Kosñipata petroglyphs. In July, the famous festival in honor of the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated, full of dances, music, local gastronomy and joy.
The dry season months, from April through October, are ideal for visiting the Tres Cruces viewpoint in Cusco. During these days, the chances of rain are minimal, allowing you to observe the sun without obstructions. According to tour guides, May, June and July offer especially beautiful sunrises.
A convenient alternative is to opt for a private tour that includes transportation, lodging, food and a visit to the archaeological site of the Ninamarca chullpas. These two-day tours include a short trekking route to the viewpoint. Andino Peru Tours offers exceptional options to explore this wonderful place surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.
